Ágnes Szontághné Demeter

horsehair jewellery maker, Folk Artist

She has been making horsehair products since 1992, which she has been doing with great joy and excellent artistic sense for 33 years now.

From 1992 to 1998, for 6 years, she learned the tricks of this rare folk craft in the National Horsehair Maker Camp organized by György Németh during the summers and developed her knowledge there. The works of Sándor Bodrogi influenced her.

She became close to folk art in 1986, first working with beadwork, but was captivated by this new material, the delicate technique, and the activity that required great patience.

This almost forgotten shepherd folk art allows us to make beautiful, finely crafted products and jewellery from the hair of a horse’s tail using a knotting technique, based on our own imagination, leaving room for our creativity. In addition to the traditional forms of horsehair jewellery making, she processes the characteristic decorative motifs of Hungarian folk art in an innovative way.

Her goal is to make jewellery that meets today’s fashion but preserves the values of Hungarian folk art.

Since 1994, she has been participating in folk art exhibitions, competitions, and fairs. She makes chains, bracelets, earrings, and rings, which she likes to decorate with glass, bone and wood beads, taking into account the traditions of horsehair jewellery making.

Most of her horsehair jewellery has been judged by the NIT (Folk Arts and Crafts Council).

In 2016, she received the title of “NATIONAL ARTIST”.

In 2021, she received the POMEGRANATE AWARD at the XVII. National Folk Art Exhibition.

Since 2010, she has also been involved in glass melting, i.e. pendants, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and rings are made using the fusing technique in her workshop, as she tries to try out various techniques as a craftsman, and glass has always been close to her.
