PET Cup

MÜMÜ - Műanyag Műhely

PET Cup is a civil initiative that started in 2013 with the aim of cleaning up the floodplains of the river Tisza and its branches from accumulated plastic waste. Based on the initiative teams of volunteers take to the water in rafts made from PET bottles collecting and sorting the waste. The competition is both a community-building and environmental programme to raise awareness about the pollution of our rivers. Thanks to the amazing work and dedication of the “pet bottle pirates”, more than 400 tonnes of waste have been removed from the floodplains of the Tisza and branches. After sorting, nearly 60% of this collected waste has been returned to the cycle.

Currently, our activities go beyond awareness-raising, competitions and year-round litter picks. We are constantly looking for innovations and new possibilities to better monitoring and collecting river waste. We also place great emphasis on educating and raising awareness among young people and older generations. These activities have led to the creation of MÜMÜ, our Plastic Workshop. In this workshop products are made using waste collected from the floodplain.
